Erik Chisholm was the leading Scottish modernist composer and a promoter of modernist music of international significance. He was also a vital force in the revival of operas.
He brought Bartók, Hindemith and Casella to Scotland, rescued Walton in a perormance of Facade; and it was for him Sorabji deigned to perform his Opus Clavicembalisticum. He was a founder of the Celtic Ballet.
In his compositions, his knowledge and use of Scottish traditional music remains unsurpassed. He was the first composer to absorb Celtic idioms into his music in form as well as content, his achievement paralleling that of Bartók in its depth of understanding and its daring.
His imaginative fertility and idiomatic adventure chased a restless muse whether in Scotland, the Far East or South Africa.
At a personal level, Chisholm saw himself as a Scot and an internationalist. He had strong left-wing leanings and a mind open to quality. He was reckless in his energies, ruthless in driving others towards achievements they scarcely thought possible, and he paid the price with his early death. His astonishing legacy as a composer and entrepreneur has never been properly presented, never mind assessed.
Erik Chisholm, Scottish Modernist (1904 - 1965), by Dr John Purser

Events 2012

The major event this year was the launch of the Hyperion CD of Chisholm’s two piano concertos on 26 March 2012. With soloist Danny Driver and the BBCSSO conducted by Rory Macdonald, the trustees are optimistic this stunning CD may open doors for Chisholm music; see recordings for reviews. See News and Events

John Purser’s outstanding article The piano music of Erik Chisholm published in International Piano No 12 Mar/Apr 2012 is essential reading for all Chisholm fans. With permission, of the editor, Claire Jackson, it is reprinted in full, in Articles. Rhinegold Publishing Editorial Team generously offered the ECT, the opportunity to place a Sheet Music Feature in the May/June issue. See Articles.

The Operas of Leoš Janáček Chisholm's only book, published posthumously in 1971, was long forgotten. In 2008, Len Mullenger requested permission to publish it on his Music Web. Since then it has had a new life with 2300 visits to the site in the past 12 months. See Writings

We note with interest that Glasgow has become a UNESCO City of Music and that Erik Chisholm is listed as a Notable Glaswegian. Is it possible that amongst the many musical events planned in Glasgow to celebrate this honour, at least one work by notable citizen Chisholm might be heard in Glasgow’s City Halls

It is with regret we learnt of the death of Colin Scott- Sutherland in December. Michael Jones has described fully in in his personal tribute COLIN SCOTT-SUTHERLAND (1930-2012) what Colin accomplished in the world of music and how he helped Erik Chisholm Trust in it's early days. ECT Trust Newsletter 2013

The Spring 2013 Newsletter released last week is being emailed to our existing online readers and by post to those without emails. To read the Spring newsletter 2013 download here.

Change is in the air and the following item is reproduced in full to emphasise our need for help to strengthen the work force.

Seeking Volunteers and Trustees
Over the last 12 years the Trust has made considerable progress in achieving its aims, but there is still much to be done. Morag Chisholm is standing down as Chair in June 2013 and will be succeeded by Fiona Wight. Morag will continue as a trustee and Vice Chair and will support Fiona who has a full-time job. We are seeking to refresh and strengthen the workforce. Particular areas for additional input are website management, communication including social networking, fund raising & administration.

We welcome application from volunteers with one or more of these skills, time to offer and support for the aims of the Trust; becoming a trustee is an option. Please text Morag on 07719843541 or Fiona 075212233 for an informal discussion or email dmoragchisholm@gmail.com to express an interest. Application will be by CV and a short statement of why you are interested and what you would like to offer.
