Wigmore Hall, London

Sun 4 Jan 2004: Wigmore Hall, London.
Murray McLachlan’s Centenary Recital.
Leopold Godowsky would have described this recital as a ‘phonorama’ of Erik Chisholm, presenting as it does music which significantly influenced him, composers with whom he was closely associated, and music on which he was regarded as authoritative.

1.Bartók: 'Out of Doors' Suite
2.Sorabji: 'Fantasiettina sul nome illustre dell'egerio pota Hugh MacDiarmid'.
3.Erik Chisholm: Sonata (1939) - 'An Riobain Dearg'
4.Janáček: Sonata 1.X.1905. 'From the Street'
5.Stevenson: "A Threepenny Sonatina', based on themes from Weill's opera (world premiere)
6.Busoni: Fantasia Contrappuntistica

"How many fingers does Murray McLachlan have? Far more than 20. How else could he generate from those orderly rows of black-and-white keys the cascades, the whirlwinds, and the Amazon forests of counterpoint? Not only does this pianist come digitally enhanced, he also boasts a distinct taste for the unusual, the eccentric and neglected... The principal exhibit was... a four-movement whopper of a piano sonata... Bagpipe twirls kick the piece into life... Chisholm favours chunky textures, expansive gestures and driving rhythms: no problem for McLachlan..."
Geoff Brown, The Times, January 6th, 2004

The Warehouse, London

Tues 10 July 2001: The Warehouse, London.
Songs for a Year and a Day
“Any time you want, I am happy to sing your father’s love songs”.
With these words Aviva Pelham set going a chain of events, which led to this concert.
One year previously Aviva and baritone Brad Liebl had joined forces in Cape Town with pianist/composer Thomas Rajna to make the CD ‘Songs for a year and a Day’ see Recordings for details.
By chance both singers were in Europe around the CD release date and we decided to launch it with a bang.
Richard Black stood in at short notice to accompany the singers (Aviva thought he was ‘brilliant’) and he and Michael Jones-gave a sparkling performance of excerpts from The Forsaken Mermaid.
Other items on the programme were just as much fun.
The intimate and informal atmosphere of the Warehouse made it the perfect venue for a happy night of music making.

RSAMD, Glasgow.

Mon 28 Aug 2000: RSAMD, Glasgow.
National Association of Youth Orchestra Festival

Erik Chisholm’s Piano Concerto No 1 (Piobaireachd)
Murray Mclachlan: pianist
Julian Clayton: conductor with the Kelvin Ensemble

The Piobaireachd is a demanding work requiring a full orchestra plus harp and celeste, instruments not routinely found in a student orchestra.
Read Therese Sutherland’s review in the Herald to find out how the Ensemble rose to the occasion.
A recording made at the final rehearsal resulted in a ‘must have’ CD according to Rob Barnett in BMS News, Dec 2000.
